Headsetgate IS Real and Old News

...What was the deal with the Steelers' coaches getting the Patriots' play-by-play radio feed in their headsets during the NFL's opening night game on Thursday Night Football? Supposedly, this was a "power problem" within Gillette Stadium. Right. There's no reason that the wireless communication system the coaches use should be anywhere near the frequency of an AM/FM radio broadcast. Yet, it apparently happened and Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin was none too happy about it. Amazing how this happens again and again with the Patriots. Owner Robert Kraft can deflect all of these controversies he wants, but at the end of the day, his franchise is dirty and the NFL allows it to continue - and awards them Super Bowl titles - because Kraft is a powerhouse in the league. Why else does CBS CEO Les Moonves always sit in Kraft's personal box at the stadium?

On the team's official website [Pittsburgh Steelers], Labriola wrote a recap of the game and had some pretty strong comments at the end of his story. Here's what he had to say, under the title of "No surprise at all."
This is the kind of stuff that happens to the visiting team in Gillette Stadium all the time. From the start of the game through the opening 14 minutes of the first quarter, the Steelers’ coaches’ headsets were receiving the Patriots Radio Network broadcast of the game. The broadcast was so loud that the Steelers coaches were unable to communicate, and the NFL rule is that if one team’s headsets are not working the other team is supposed to be forced to take their headsets off. It’s what the NFL calls the Equity Rule. Strangely enough, whenever an NFL representative proceeded to the New England sideline to shut down their headsets, the Steelers headsets cleared. Then as the representative walked away from the New England sideline, the Steelers’ headsets again started to receive the Patriots game broadcast.
Those are some pretty bold claims, especially from the team's official website.

The fact of the matter is, these issues dubbed Headsetgate have been happening ever since at least the days of the Spygate cheating scandal, even though a slew of mainstream sources would have you believe this is all much ado about nothing. Take a listen to at least the first part of the YouTube video below dealing with the book Spygate the Untold Story to hear about how things like this have been going on for a long time. Prior to this latest SNAFU, when the story about Peyton Manning thinking that Gillette stadium's locker rooms were bugged was being discussed on the radio, I heard another former NFL player say they always had headset problems at Gillette... and nowhere else that they played.

The Unmentioned Consequences of the NFL's Recent Legal Battles

Excerpt:

Because there is no law outside of the loose interpretation of fraud from preventing a league from fixing its own games, Afran’s conclusion is correct. One cannot fix a sporting event for gambling purposes; that is illegal. And one cannot fix an intellectual contest for entertainment purposes; that was made illegal after the quiz show scandal of the 1950s.

But fix a sporting event for entertainment purposes? Completely legal.

What’s worse, the lawyer representing the NFL, Shepard Goldfein, actually argued in court that “fans likely would buy tickets even if they knew the Patriots were stealing signals.” In other words, the NFL realizes that much like pro wrestling, even if fans knew the football was rigged, they still pay their money to see it.

In March 2011, the Supreme Court refused to hear Mayer's appeal thereby affirming the lower court's findings.

As these two court cases prove, it is time to see the NFL in a completely different light. It is not a loosely organized group of teams fighting tooth-and-nail to beat their rivals. No, the NFL is a well-organized machine out to maximize its profits by doing everything within their power to make people consume their product: the games.

…And that includes possibly allowing fixed games to occur because sucker fans would still pay to watch them play football.
